Switzerland: Bluetongue detected in calf

Bluetongue has been detected in a calf in the Swiss canton of Freiburg, says the Federal Veterinary Office (FVO) with Switzerland.
The calf has now been culled and no further measures are necessary, according to the FVO. The rest of the herd has been vaccinated. The infection of the animal probably occurred in late autumn of last year.
Bluetongue was first detected in Switzerland in October 2007. It primarily affects cattle, sheep and goats.In the summer of 2008 and spring 2009, cattle and sheep in Switzerland were vaccinated against bluetongue. These animals will be re-vaccinated in 2010.
